Potential big NFL Change?
The NFL plans to trial an electronic system for measuring first downs in the preseason. If it is successful and receives approval, the tracking system will be fully implemented in the 2024 regular season. The traditional sticks and chains method would serve as a backup. If the system works, it would make a more accurate measuring system that reduces the amount of human error. If the league sees problems such as latency issues, the move could be tabled to 2025 and the chain crew will continue to do their job.
